There are very few live albums that capture the artist and the moment. Many are just greatest hits albums; some are recorded at mega concerts where the only sense of "live" is clapping at the end of songs. "Curtis Live" is not one of these types of albums. This one is something special. It's intimate, it's recording quality is crystal clear, it's by a man who's lyrical poetry is unmatched. The band is so friggin tight on this album its sick. When many talk about funk they think Parliament, but I think that funk is something deeper. Its something you feel when you hear a song. Its the bass line, the drum work, its the guitar, sax or B3. Beyond that its the lyrics and vocal presentation of the singer. Curtis is the master of this as you feel his emotion, you hear his message, and you understand his point of view. After listening to this album once again, I realize once again that funk has always been a catalyst. It binds people together, either in its message, energy or vibe. You may not like Curtis' political or moral stance, and some of the issues he spoke about may not be so relevant anymore, but you have appreciate the man's musical prowess and passion for what he was talking about. Check out some musical greatness here.
